Winter Olympic Snowball Ring Toss

Posted: 16 Feb 2010 01:52 PM PST

Today’s Winter Olympic event is the Snowball Ring Toss. We’re trying to get 5 snowballs (or marshmallows) into each of the 5 Olympic rings! It may look like a simple task, but it’s harder than it looks! We had to go around a few times and practice as this event takes some skill!

Supplies for Snowball Ring Toss:

  • marshmallows, mini or regular
  • 5 Olympic colored pipe cleaners, blue, black, red, yellow, and green

Loop your pipe cleaners into a circle and twist the two ends together. Place all 5 circles in their order of the Olympic rings.

Standing a few feet away from the rings, try tossing a marshmallow into each of the 5 rings. Here’s my first attempt above, with only 3 making it in! I’m not sure if I’m Olympic quality, but I’m going to keep practicing, hoping to make the Olympic team!

Quick and Easy Sewn Paper Garlands

Posted: 16 Feb 2010 01:41 AM PST

Paper garlands are a beautiful accent for any party or home decor.  They are really easy to make and can match any theme.

First, you will need to start with cardstock punched out in your desired shape. You can use punches, die cut machines, a Cricut, or just plain scissors.

Next, you will need to use your sewing machine to sew the shapes together.

You can sew your shapes as close or as far apart as you like.

When you are satisfied with the length of your garland, just snip it off.  Viola!

Here’s a sample of a bird garland we made to match a bird themed party.  This was a nice accent to our dessert table and really added a pop of color.

Miniature Figure Skating with the Stars

Posted: 15 Feb 2010 05:38 PM PST

As part of our Winter Olympic Games for Kids series, we’ve come up with a fun Miniature Ice Skating Rink. Our pair figure skaters are warming up on the ice as we speak!

Supplies for Mini Ice Skating Rink:

  • cardboard box top – or 9×13 cake pan
  • tinfoil
  • pipe cleaners, aka chenille stems
  • tape
  • snow stickers, optional

Cover your entire cardboard box lid with the tinfoil and tape the sides down if needed. I added a few snowflake shaped stickers for decor!

For each skater, you need one pipe cleaner. Follow these instructions:

  1. Bend it in half and bend each foot. Then twist at the top of the legs (for it’s bum).
  2. Bend out each arm and twist.
  3. Then twist the neck and round out the head.

We added a little tinfoil for the ice skates and a mini skirt for the girl.  Our figure skaters are ready for their performance! I hope the judges will give them good marks!
